Elements of Composition by Thomas Francis
“I think the universe is pure geometry – basically a beautiful shape twisting around and dancing over space-time.” — Antony Garrett Lisi
Thomas Francis has chosen the language of straight line and pure colour to produce on one level, extreme purity and on another, clarity and force. The artist has taken advantage of his diverse cultural experiences in different parts of the world to portray them in colourful abstract art.
The behaviour of shapes is as such that it can be used to express your feelings in the composition of an artwork. Squares & rectangles can portray strength and stability. Circles & ellipses can represent continuous movement. Triangles can lead the eye in an upward movement.
His compositions are based on colour and expand over the borders of the canvas into space beyond the picture. He continues to explore the relationship between lines and blocks of colour, achieving an ever-increasing purity in his paintings.
The artist cleverly plays with the tones of colour on his canvas. The tonal values of an artwork can be adjusted to alter its expressive character. He uses different tones to create a dramatic or tranquil atmosphere and rhythm or pattern within a composition.
“Thomas Francis’s journey with colourful geometrical works has a profound connection with harmony and love, each telling a story.” — Jalpa H Vithalani, Creative Head of Cosmic Heart Gallery.
Thomas plays with various moods and elements of composition. These include unity, balance, movement, rhythm, focus, contrast, pattern and proportion.
Colour is the visual element that has the strongest effect on our emotions. We use colour to create the mood or atmosphere of an artwork. There are many different approaches to the use of colour. It can be used to depict light, tone, pattern, form, symbol, movement, harmony, contrast, mood, among other elements.
“Bombay holds a special place in my heart. The sea, the streets and the people of Bombay make this place very special. Having the opportunity to hold an exhibition at Cosmic Heart Gallery here in Mumbai is an honour.” — artist Thomas Francis.
