Centenary Celebration of the Haji Ali Dargah Trust

HAJI ALI BABA – The Prince of the Waves

All those who live in Mumbai know of Haji Ali. For many this shrine is a place of immense faith and devotion. For some it is a beautiful landmark. For many the very sight of Haji Ali Dargah, about 500 feet into the Arabian Sea, like a floating palace brings forth a host of memories.

So who is Haji Ali Baba?

Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari is from ancient Persia, Iran, now Uzbekistan and he was called Qutub-E-Zamaan (highest Saint of His times). There are many stories of how he landed in India, the most convincing one of how he found his way back to Mumbai on His way back from a voyage to Mecca. Whatever be the case, Haji Ali Baba spent the last few years of His life in Mumbai, always close to the spot where His holy body has been preserved. He spoke with all those who wanted his guidance — caste, creed & religion did not play a role.

He was of the firm belief that each day passes like the clouds in the sky and thus every moment you have the opportunity, do good. Focus on good and spread the inherent goodness of all creation. His philosophy was that if you go within and really know yourself, you will know God, as God resides within each one. So know yourself. Like Ramana Maharishi said – Who am I?

In February 1431, Haji Ali told His followers that when He left His body, they should put Him in a casket and release the tomb in the water in the Arabian Sea. Wherever the casket would resurface would be His final resting place. Where we have all gathered today is the very sacred spot where the casket carrying Haji Ali Baba’s body resurfaced.

People from all faiths come and bow their heads in obeisance to Haji Ali Baba with immense faith.

COSMIC HEART GALLERY at New Marine Lines is an art space with a difference that offers an exquisite collection of art which will touch your soul. We are committed to bringing beautiful gifts from the world of sound and art into people’s lives to enable them connect to the Divine.

For this special occasion of the “CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF THE HAJI ALI DARGAH TRUST”, Cosmic Heart Gallery had put together an exquisite collection of “Moalla Calligraphy” all the way from Iran, by world renowned artist Kaveh Afraie. It is no coincidence that Haji Baba’s roots are from Iran.

‘It is the first time in the history of shrine’ that art has been displayed amidst the blessed courtyard. This Exhibition now continues at the gallery.

Many people in rural parts of India consider menstruation a dirty process, some think of it as a disease and all of this occurs due to lack of awareness and age-old taboos. The volunteers of the organization provide a training program under which women from slums & villages are taught how to make their own napkins rather than using ash, sand, leaves, jute bags, dirty cloth, etc.

“Beautiful calligraphy is defined as art of beautiful writing adhering to aesthetics and grace. Not only does it have great aesthetic value but also powerful energy signatures and frequency that it translates into homes; as each writing carries erudite sayings, prayers, periodicals and deeds of the Prophet Muhammed. This unique collection has been adorned with Tazhib (gilding) which has been derived from “zahab” meaning “gold”.

A unique performance of the Tahir Faridi Sufi Qawwali Ensemble was arranged for this special occasion. Tahir Qawwal’s passionately devotional music is a leading representation of Sufi Qawwali music worldwide. With its rich rhythmic grooves, soaring vocal melodies and bright intensity, Tahir’s music urges us to lift our hearts in exaltation and devotion to the Divine. His Qawwali ensemble embodies an authentic continuation of the ancient tradition of Sufi music.

Going down in history as a first, sister Aminah Chishti performed at the shrine (she is an integral part of the ensemble) representing equality & love. Tahir Faridi Qawwali Ensemble is deeply respected. During their 15 years of world-wide touring in places as diverse as the USA, Europe, Indonesia, India and Egypt, they have captivated audiences with their dynamic passion and skill, and continue to deepen the appreciation for this great Sufi tradition in the West and all over the world.

Sharing Cosmic Heart’s blissful moments of the special evening at the blessed shrine, the journey with art & music continues!
